Subject: chemotherapy induced "menopause" may not be true menopause, hormonally
Date: Tuesday, November 18, 2003 11:01 AM

From Medscape CME... what this means is that women who stop their periods after having had chemotherapy, may not be truly in menopause, but have much higher estrogen levels than menopausal women [even though they may have had no periods for 6 months]. This would probably mean no hot flashes, but could also mean stimulation of estrogen-receptor-positive tumors.

Slide 27. Premenopausal Serum E2 Levels May Persist After Chemotherapy-Induced Amenorrhea

They also cautioned based on data such as these that in a premenopausal woman who becomes amenorrheic after chemotherapy, one should not simply assume that such a woman has now achieved a postmenopausal status. Among patients studied in this abstract presented at ASCO 2002, a significant proportion, 10 of 16 amenorrheic patients, had estradiol levels that were not in the postmenopausal range even though half of these women had been amenorrheic for more than 6 months.
